Silsbee, Texas lies amidst the stunning Piney Woods region, within the Big Thicket National Preserve.  Established in 1894, John Henry Kirby was the primary settler of this small sawmill town.  Silsbee dwells within the Beaumont-Port Arthur metro area in southeastern Texas.

Silsbee, TX is a highly accessible area served by US Highways 69 and 96 and the Santa Fe Railway.  The Port of Beaumont and the Port of Orange are a short drive away.  Forty percent of the population live and work in Silsbee; the remaining residents have an average commute time of 21 minutes.  The nation’s average commute time is 26 minutes.

Silsbee, population 6,393, is the primary center of commerce for Hardin County. Educational, health and social services, manufacturing and retail trade are the primary industries providing employment.  Louisiana Pacific, formerly Kirby Mills, Burlington Northern Santa Fe and the Silsbee Independent School District are major employers within Silsbee, Texas.  In recent years, citizens formed an Economic Development Corporation to aid in their growth and progress

Silsbee students have access to an outstanding Independent School District, which works with the community to foster a well-rounded education.  Higher education exists in the area’s surrounding Silsbee, TX. Lamar University is 24 miles away, in Beaumont. Other colleges in the general vicinity include Baylor College of Medicine, Rice University and Texas Southern University.  Sixteen percent of Silsbee residents over 25 years old have a bachelor’s or other advanced college degree.

Silsbee residents enjoy a relatively mild, humid subtropical climate that accentuates the four distinct seasons.  The inviting weather allows for plenty of time to explore the area’s lovely natural habitat.  Red Cloud Water Park has a beautiful spring-fed lake, with white sandy beaches, thrilling waterslides and plenty of wide-open spaces in which to play.  The Texas Nature Conservancy Preserve, characterized by a unique blend of forest and wetland areas, offers visitors an intimate look at the wild plants and animals that inhabit the region. Village Creek meanders through the sanctuary and provides opportunities for canoeing and camping in the unique tree house facilities. The Big Thicket National Preserve, which includes the Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail and the Roy E. Larsen Sandyland Sanctuary, are two more of Silsbee’s many natural wonders.

Silsbee, Texas boasts an enchanting downtown area where the historic atmosphere provides a backdrop to the various activities found there.  These include first-run movies, various shopping opportunities and restaurants.  The local Parks Department offers several developed parks with playgrounds and sport facilities that are open to the public.  Visitors to the area enjoy the Ice House Museum, which features cultural events and the wares of regional artisans.  The Silsbee Veteran Park, located next to the Ice House Museum, stands in honor of local residents who served in the U.S. military over the years.  In addition, the Silsbee Little Theater provides numerous theatrical productions for residents and visitors to the area.
